The Spanish commercial cucumber network is into the hands of the Almería-Granada binomial with constant currents between these two provinces and operations among companies of the 2 zones of production.
This reality is shown that the 10 first Spanish trader companies in volume of cucumber, 7 are located in Almería and 3 in Granada.
The company leader of cucumber commercialization in Spain is the company of Almería La Unión, with a volume of 41,000 tons and making differences respecting to the three companies of Granada. Fulgencio Spa, El Grupo and La Caña, with 30,000 tons of cucumber each one, are located in a reference point with an expansive work made in the last years and related to a zone of reference in cucumber like Carchuna (Granada).
And it is that the evolution of the companies of Granada towards the business of the cucumber is evident and the example is this zone of production which is the one that grows more in surface, supply and confidence among the operators. The supply of cucumber of Granada is located in the present time in the threshold of the 257,000 tons and the operators of this province emphasize that the evolution has not finished yet.
Perichán leads the French cucumber production
Mercadona has meant a push and strategic turn in range product for the company of Murcia Perichán. This company, centred in tomato during many years, now is undergoing a diversification process thanks to its supply of French cucumber of 9,500 tons, leading the commercialization in Spain of this cucumber segment.
The company of Murcia Perichán leads the French cucumber commercialization in Spain. This reality confirms its diversification in lines of product and at the moment it has the 60 per cent of the production of Spain of Spanish cucumber, explains Juan Cruz, commercial manager of the company, linked to Mercadona.
This company is one of the inter-suppliers of the Spanish chain and, concretely, of cucumber, key product to understand the diversification of the trader company of Murcia and its consolidation.
The bet of the company on the great Spanish distribution began at the beginning of the century XXI and this strategy has allowed an activity during the 12 months of Spanish cucumber and without having to leave the Spanish market.
After Perichan there is Costa de Almería with a volume of supply of more than 6,000 tons. The range of products is much diversified. However, French cucumber is the 5 per cent of its volume. Its strong point keeps on being cucumber with sales of more than 25,000 tons.
