The D.O Chirimoya Costa-Tropical is opened to the EU market

Spain is the main market for this subtropical product with the characteristic of quality of the Regulating Board of the Origin Denomination of Chirimoya-Costa Tropical.

At the present time, the O.D. has more than 900 hectares. In the campaign 2005-2006 the amount of 8,600 tons of custard apple were commercialized and was more of the 70 per cent of the Spanish exports of this product.

Of the forecasted volume in this campaign, nearly the 12-15 per cent will be certificated with the O.D., considering that all the regulations of certification and quality will be applied strictly as possible. Spain is the most important market for this product but the sector is working on operations of international promotion.

Germany and United Kingdom are the main interest points. The O.D. is trying to get into the new markets with commercial agreements to promote this product «in Germany and the United Kingdom», said González, secretary of the O.D. Costa-Tropical. The investment of the program is going to be 100,000 euros per each country, and will be developing during three years, looking for impelling the knowledge and the satisfaction of the demand that the European consumer is doing, in England and Germany, where there is a reasonable consumption like being able to invest this amount on promotion.
